Every team consists of more than just coaches and athletes — parents, assistants, and volunteers want to see their team thrive and often fill in the gaps where needed. The mission of this project was to empower every member of a team to play a part in capturing every moment, or in other words guest users without Hudl accounts need a way to access and record with the Flex camera.

I began by holding a workshop with a team of about ten engineers. We spent an hour brainstorming every possible way we could think of how to solve this issue, in-device and digitally. I used an impact map to organize and sort through these ideas to find the solutions that were quickest and had the highest impact. After the workshop, I met with several engineers from both our squad and other squads to discuss the brainstormed solutions and refine our ideas.

We ended up wanting to explore validation for three solutions.

1. Hudl admin-user generates a one-time QR code on phone that—when scanned—directs guest user to activation page

2. Hudl admin-user sends a chosen guest user an activation invites through email or text

3. Deep linking a QR code on an actual device to the camera installation page

From the workshop we deduced three possible solutions that would have the highest impacts and cost the team the least. I worked out some very in-depth, action-based user flow to better understand the screens we would need to build for each. This flow informed the creation of realistic wireframes for prototyping.

To better understand the market and the desires of our product’s future customers, I conducted nine interviews with internal beta users. In these meetings, the interviewees navigated through prototypes of the top three solutions. I also sent out a quick 16-person survey to external clubs and coaches, to uncover more insights on customer behavior regarding who will be the ones recording on Focus Flex.

Through our research efforts and engineering discovery, our squad realized that there was no one workflow that would cover all the factors we faced. So, we decided to implement a two-headed solution, and I was able to create high fidelity wireframes to represent each.

First, for the first-time volunteers with no Hudl-IDs, we input a scannable QR system. The QR code would be housed on the device itself and would allow anyone holding the device, access to using it. The second solution we finalized was aimed towards coaches who want more control over the device and prefer to plan.  This piece of work would allow coaches to share Focus Flex privileges with any volunteer from their phone via text or email.

Through this experience I was able to take inter-squad conversations and propose a solution to a very complex process. The work we completed to outline a guest user workflow for Hudl focus flex will be utilized and developed in the coming sprints.
